Why Our 19th Century Graphics Are Worthy of Your Attention
Highly Significant Artists
The 19th Century artists we feature are among the leading figures
of their era. These are the artists detailed in page after page
of significant art-history texts. Their prominent place in the vast
history of human expression is assured. And our 19th Century prints
enable you to bring a very real piece of that significance to your
home or exhibit space.
Exclusivity
The artists of the late 19th Century typically didn't create prints
in volume, as became common practice in later years. In many cases,
fewer than 50 of each individual work were produced during this
period. Furthermore, many of that rare handful of prints are inevitably
lost to the ages. These facts make 19th Century prints a terrific
way to collect works of art that are without question highly exclusive.
Sought After
Expression Galleries' 19th Century artists are the very same names
you'll find in museums and the most sophisticated collections around
the world. In fact, many such prestigious collections proudly display
the very same works we offer to the general public. Thus, you can
readily bring a museum-like presence to your collection by selecting
from our fine offerings of 19th Century graphics.
Affordability
While original paintings by these 19th Century artists often trade
for high six- and even seven-figure prices, prints of the era are
still relatively affordable. This makes them an ideal way for people
of average means to acquire the prestige, exclusivity, and sheer
artistic brilliance of the world's most celebrated artists.
About the 19th Century Artists We Feature
We love the print works of James McNeill Whistler. This was an
American in the center of the European revolution in fine art. Like
Rembrandt, Whistler began obscuring detail from his prints. Rembrandt
did this by making the print darker, while Whistler removed detail,
leaving the mind to fill in what he removed. Please study our collection
of Whistler. Take a special look at his lithographs. We believe
they are very much undervalued in today's market.
Another key figure in our collection of 19th Century artists is
Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Among Impressionism's early founders, he
went on to become one of the most popular of artists working in
the style. Although perhaps best known for his paintings of the
era, he also created an array of extraordinarily fine prints at
the same time.
Renoir didn't start doing prints until he was much older, and
his printmaking was a strong departure from his Impressionist colleagues,
who rarely if ever did graphics. For this reason, Renoir prints
offer an exceptional opportunity indeed for collectors interested
in Impressionist artists. Such graphics provide much of the presence
and prestige of this universally lauded artistic style, without
the prohibitively high costs of original paintings.
But this is not to say Renoir prints are easy to find. His graphic
work is getting increasingly difficult to obtain as more collectors
enter the market. Museums are also collecting Renoir and it is safe
to say that his work will continue to escalate in value.
Another of the fine 19th Century graphics we offer are the realist
works of James Tissot. He created some of the most stunning etchings
of the 19th Century, which are known for their amazingly detailed,
highly accurate depiction of England's upwardly mobile middle class.
In Tissot's mind, he was competing with photography. He wanted to
go beyond the realism of a photograph.
Commanding a similarly prominent place among our 19th Century artists
is visionary Felix Buhot. His moody view of rainy Paris and his
additional imagery in the margins of his prints gives his work a
feeling of mystery and complete originality.
Paul Helleu and Manuel Robbe are considered to be two of the greatest
painters of women during the Belle Epoque. There are a number of
underlying cultural shifts that brought about the Belle Epoque,
but at the heart of it were the pursuit of pleasure and the appreciation
of beautiful women. For this reason, these groundbreaking artists
represent the true spirit of this lively artistic period. Right
now we have a strong collection of Robbe etchings / aquatint. You'll
be delighted with their warm depiction of Paris, its parks, and
the women and children that circulated about them.
We are also proud to feature the work of other leading 19th Century
masters, including Charles Dana Gibson and Hellen Hyde.
We invite you to savor the work of all these artists. We'll be
happy to explain the nuances, philosophy, and significance of each
in greater detail as you please.
